I have to remove manually a threat, but am not able to reach the file in my backup

Hi,

Today I did a scan of my whole system, including the external drive that contains my backups and sophos found a virus in my backup. I tried with the description you gave to remove the file via time machine, but am not able to reach it.

I include the message I gave with the path in it. I opened time machine, got to the right date, but cannot come into my external drive then. How can I solve this threat?

Kind regards,

Mariella Sormani

  • I already tried to do that, but that didn't work. In Time Machine I cannot follow that path.

  • Thank you. Can you please elaborate on what you mean by 'I cannot follow that path?'

  • It's difficult explain in English. But I will try. In my alerts there is a path to the place where my virus is in. It's a deleted mail with an zip in the appendix. When I go to time machine, that is what I read to delete a message that's in a backup, I am not able to click on my external disk where my backup is in. I already tried to delete the backup in finder of this date and also of another date, but the virus still isn't gone. Now it's not only in the backup of the 20th of June 2016, but also in the backup of 27th of June and the 13th of June.

Hope you understand it better now.

    Mariella,

This is not on your computer.  This is in a Time Machine backup on your Time Machine, the Wester Digital My Book eternal hard drive.

More importantly, this is in a zip file in a deleted email in the backup of the Mail app for user Harde Schijf iMac Mariella.  The email was from June 20,2016.  If you have already deleted all the deleted messages in your Mail App, I would not worry about this. Even if you recover your computer from last June, the virus is in the deleted folder.  Since the virus was not found in the Mail app on your computer this year 2017, I think that deleted message with the virus is gone.

The virus is unable to do anything in a zip file in the compressed Time Machine storage on your external hard drive.
