PMX Queue stalled

On my edge servers configured as filters (reinjecting by smtp, as opposed to milters) emtying the queues stopped. This affects mainly admin notifications. Filtering functions flawlessly. I had this problem some years ago but can't remember the solution.

The pmx_log entries look like this:

pmx-queue list gives

#1132 <postmaster@XXXXXXXXXX.ac.at> (28 bytes) 2016-01-26 15:52:01
    3 minutes ago: 101: connect to localhost: Operation timed out

The relevant entries in pmx.conf are

mail_sender = smtp:localhost:10026
admin = PureMessage Admin <postmaster@XXXXXXXXXX.ac.at>

I tried the solution suggested in https://community.sophos.com/products/web-appliance/f/5/p/1761/3580#3580

in pmx-qdigest.conf

centralized = true

but without any success.

Suggestions are much appreciated.
