MTP/PTP blocking not allowing Apple devices to charge

I've found that this question has been asked before but I can't find a resolution.

We use MTP/PTP blocking on our network to prevent data transfer from a USB device to the PC. Since applying this block we have discovered it also prevents iPhones from charging via the USB port but other devices such as Android are still able to charge. Do you know if this is has been fixed, is likely to be fixed or whether there is a work around?

Thanks

  • I've not found any official documentation yet, but it seems that with iOS 12, devices are able to charge even with MPT/PTP blocking turned on.  I haven't been able to get my hands on an iOS 11 device to test to see if it's really something with the upgrade to 12.  But right now I have a test laptop with USB and MPT/PTP set to block, it definitely blocked the data connection for my iPhone X (got the alert), but it's sitting there happily charging my phone.

Anyone else seeing the same thing?  I've also gotten one report that the phone WON'T charge if it's locked, but once he unlocks it, it starts charging until the phone goes to sleep.  My phone is charging while locked, so not sure what's going on.

I should also note that we are using Sophos Central, not Enterprise Console (not sure if that would make a difference)
