Sophos Messenger - sending local messages

Following a major Sophos Endpoint Protection update, I am left with Enterprise Console stating that over half of the managed endpoints show errors and will finally be updated only after a new start of the endpoint has taken place.

Many users are not aware of this situation (Sophos icon hidden), nor do they regularly restart their endpoints. The Sophos Messenger is used when Sophos needs to inform administrators about an important topic.

Is it possible somehow, using Sophos Messenger or something similar, to send a popup message to those endpoints which are showing this error ?

Resolving the endpoint to a particular user and then sending a message externally to the user is a very tedious way, when the information that is really needed (endpoint not a particular user) is already available within the Enterprise Console.

  • Hello Pete Hilton,

    endpoints show errors
you are talking about Restart needed ...? To recap what I've said it in this thread: While categorized under Errors it's a Warning, the major part of the update/upgrade is done, protection isn't degraded, detection data continues to be updated. Immediate action isn't required.
nor do they regularly restart their endpoints
and how does Windows perform its updates?

Sophos Messenger is only available on the management server (not even remote consoles). There's a recent post by about a similar problem.

  • Hi Christian,

Thanks for the quick response. Yes I was referring to "Restart needed". I am using a german language version "Updates werden erst nach Neustart umgesetzt" and therefore the correct english wording was not known. Regarding the Windows updates; the endpoints do not run indefinitely, but are also not shutdown every night.

Thanks for the link to the post by Nigel, that sounds exactly like what I was looking for.

  • Hello Pete,

dunno why they chose umgesetzt instead of wirksam, I'm not always happy with the wording of the German translation. BTW - the language used for the display depends on the locale in use when the Console is started, so it's rather easy to see the "original" messages. Note that it says needed - not required.

I consider the Restart needed more as an informational warning and not as indication of an issue and that you have to take action. Keeping in mind that the roll-out of new versions is staggered over a longer period (i.e. different customers get them at different days) putting them into effect immediately isn't critical.
