Verizon says I cannot send email because of Sophos. How do I disable the program to test this?

Verizon asked me to changedthe settings on the smtp. Now, I cannot send email from several accounts.

After 27 minutes, they say I should disable the virus program to test if it is impeding the send function. Please advise.
