understanding license usage

I have an Endpoint Standard Protection license with 4 seats. I asked these kinds of questions when I setup the account some time ago but am finding I remain unclear on how to make sure I've got things properly licensed.

If I look at "Devices", I have four: Laura, MomDad, Square and Vostro. Not that it matters but all of these are running macOS except for Vostro, which is Windows 7.

If I look at "People", I see nine. Most of my computers have two user accounts -- one is a standard (non-admin) user who is the primary user of that station, plus a second account with admin privileges that I use solely to authenticate for installing software. The MomDad station is unique in that it contains an admin account plus a "mom" user and a "dad" user.

So if I look at the "Dashboard", it shows me as having 4 active users, 4 inactive and 1 "not protected". Per whatever information I found when I first setup Endpoint, I added the standalone admin accounts (for example, MomDad/admac) as login entries on the "Administrators" user in Endpoint. From what I recall, this was to make those users "not count" as additional seats.

I am the sole user of both Square and Vostro. My understanding of licenses was that each individual counts as a license -- so that would be me, mom, dad and Laura for a total of 4. Or do I need 5 licenses because even though I am the sole user of two devices those still count as separate licenses?

Have I configured things appropriately to "ignore" the admin accounts that I've setup solely for authentication? Is there any better way to hide them from the dashboard so it doesn't look like I'm operating with less licenses than I should have?

Anyone who can better explain this -- much appreciated.

  • Hello ,

on the Sophos www pages there's a fine print Legal at the bottom, and on the Legal page you'll find the Licensing Guidelines (you did agree to them, didn't you? [;)]). I'd suggest you read it in full. To quote from the definitions:

    3. 'User' means an employee, consultant or other individual [emphasis mine] who benefits from the Licensed Product.

    Guess it's quite clear.

  • Did I agree to the licensing guidelines? Yes. I even read them, believe it or not. Are they clear? Hardly.

Every one of my computers has at least two accounts: an admin and a user. The licensing guidelines refer to "an individual", so in most cases these two accounts on a single station should count as one user. I only have one computer that actually has two users. The dashboard shows me as having 4 active, 4 inactive and 1 "not protected" Endpoint Users (that's the terminology shown in the console). Yet if I go to the licensing portion of my account, it's showing I have 4 of 4 licenses in use. If the licensing section is accurate, I *should* have no unprotected users, right? That's not what dashboard says. At best, this information is contradictory and confusing, and leaves me wondering if I have someone who's not really protected.

I should be able to configure this service so that it correctly reflects the licensing used consistently in all areas of the site. So if in the "People" section if I have two entries there -- say Square\Chris and Square\Admac -- shouldn't I be able to somehow link those two accounts so they are treated as a single user? Because it's the same guy!

  • Hello Charles Bailey,

    Are they clear? Hardly.
Ever read Microsoft's Licensing? If you call Sophos' hardly clear then a term to describe Microsoft's doesn't exist  [;)]

Seriously - Central Admin can't guess to which person an account belongs, and assuming all accounts on an certain computer belong to the same individual might or might not be correct. So how can licensing be accurate without input from the SuperAdmin?

to somehow link those two accounts
did I say I'm not working with Central? From the Central Admin Help I'd suppose that the User Summary - Logins is the place to do it - but it might have a different purpose.
