Web CID

How many of you are using a Web CID?  Does it offer better updating performance than the default SMB/CIFS?

  • We use WebCIDs as secondary update locations when clients are "outside" or in one case - where a department has firewalled their subnet and block SMB - as primary. How do you define performance - load (cycles, memory, ...) on the server, load on the client, total load, network load, elapsed time  ...?

  • If clients are "outside" why not just point them at the Sophos update location?  Or do you monitor the webserver logs to verify that downloads are occuring?

One reason is that you have to specify your license credentials in order to access Sophos as update location - something you probably don't want to do because they are sent effectively in plain text. Another reason is that you might want to control which version the client uses. Thirdly it is possible to apply a specific configuration to the CID.
