The device control service failed to stop (0x80070005)

I have this error from one managed computer. On examining the Services MMC on the affected machine, it appears that the Sophos Device Control Service is, in fact, already stopped. An attempt to start it manually on that machine fails with an error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Any ideas as to how to correct this, pleae?

  • Hello Elgar,

Yup - if it's an isolated event, restart the computer. I see these failed to stop messages every now and then but usually it happens when the client is shut down (can't remember that I've seen it during an update). Haven't bothered to investigate the cause. The sure thing is - if the shutdown is aborted parts of Windows no longer work correctly (although you might not notice) and I've seen that Device Control and Data Control can be affected. Even if this is not the cause the only reasonable action is a restart.

Of course if it happens regularly it's a different story.
