Unless an install/upgrade is in progress it contains some 3MB and no subdirectories - (simplified statement follows:) everything else should be temporary and be cleaned up by the installer when the install finishes.

On which machines does this occur - some servers, all servers, workstations as well?

It happens on servers Windows 2003 SP2.

I clear down the autoupdate folder but it keeps filling up again.

There are folders with names in unix timestamp format that appear daily. (each with about 50MB)

When I try and delete these folders the majority of the contents are removed apart from the following.

eg C:\WINDOWS\Temp\sophos_autoupdate1.dir\1267517712\program files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\Sophos Anti-Virus (de)

Any ideas on how to remove these files and stop these folders filling up?

found that killing cidaemon.exe process allowed me to delete the files, after which cidaemon.exe respawned and created more files in C:\WINDOWS\Temp\sophos_autoupdate1.dir

Why didn't I think of this before?
