Search Feature... Where Is it?!

So, I was told by many that when Enterprise Console (EC) Ver.4.0 would come out, it would have that FUNDAMENTAL feature of search for a computer name in the Enterprise Console.

As I'm testing the EC ver. 4.0 for preparation of  upgrading our company's Console version, that's the first thing I looked for in testing after install...

... and it's missing!

Why would an AV company geared more towards corporate-level market groups NOT have a seach feature in their dashboard console knowing well that companys like and use similar naming features for their end-users' devices?

Yes, you can select the computer list window and start typing out the name of the computer, but has anyone tried search for a computer name similar to COMLAP112200-00123 in an entire pool of computers named COMLAP112200-00XXX?

Can anyone from Sophos please give me at least one valid reason why this feature has not been implemented within your latest and greatest Enterprise Console?

  • Hi,

    This is a requirement that the product team are very much aware of and its something we're looking to address in a future release of SEC. Generally speaking search is an area in which we are looking to add some interesting enhancements to the management console. I'd welcome input from the forum on what type of "search" functionality you would find useful or examples of good search implementation in the context of network / security management.

    Best regards,

    John Stringer (Product Manager)

  • Hello John

    My contribution by areas:

    Deployment:
    =========
    1) One option to deploy SAV directly by Name or IP. For example, the PC is new and the IT Manager need install the protection without use the Search option, else only input the IP and inmediatelly lauch the install process.

    2) One option to install aditional programs as FW and Compliance Agent without reinstall all Sophos components.

    3) Uninstall option for troubleshoting purpose. (now when SAV can't is installed the IT Team need visit the PC and uninstall manually all components and try install again)

    Search / Filter
    ============

    1) By IP

    2) By Name

    Reports
    ======

    1) Executive Reports by PC (Malware detection, Policie Usage)

    2) Hardware Inventory as CPU, Disk, OS.

    2) Icon notification when a PC is executing a remote scan or scan in progress.

    Accessibility
    ==========

    1) Access to PC Quarantine from EConsole to solve o clean malware from EC directly.
    2) Complety central SAV client configuration (as Right Click, Quarantine Access, Permissions to activate/deactivate protection)

    3) Web Console.

    Endpoint

    =======

    1) Less memory usage.

  • Hi John,

    Glad to see you participating here.

    <rant>

    I would like to echo Echo's (sorry :) sentiments on the search feature.  How could the dev's implement an overhaul of EMLib, integrate DLP, yet leave out the oft-promised basic UI search features?  This is right up there with the clipboard debacle!  I'm still scratching my head as to why I have to wade through a machine's entire detail page in EC4 in order to extract a single piece of information e.g. hostname, ip etc...

    </rant> :manhappy:

    To your question:  I'm sure anything you decide to add around search functionality will be nice, but for Pete's sake, please add the basic hostname ip address search.  It's maddening to search for machine via type ahead amongst 20K others...

  • Hi,

    There are some new search capabilities within SEC 4 via the event viewer capability (for application control; device control; firewall and data control). Of course we plan to do more - the first step, which has been commonly requested, will be a computer / IP search within SEC.

    I'm also with you on the copy and paste "limitations". In fact its one of the reasons you can copy a single row of data from the event viewer as opposed to exported all the data into a CSV and then finding the row you want.

    Regards,

    John
