results of removing Mal/ConfInf-A, W32/Confick-D

When Sophos reported that my laptop was infected with W32/Confick-D, a worm, I followed directions and downloiaded a file to remove this worm.  After running it and successfully removing both Mal/ConfInf-A and W32/Confick-D, the report listed a number of files which it said it "Could not checK", but which were corrupted.   A much larger number of files also say "Could not check", but then have the notation "virus scan failed" in parentheses after the file information.  I did notice that most of the "virus scan failed" files were on my flashdrive.

Two questions:

a) Is it possible to repair the damaged files?

b) What does it mean that ""virus scan failed", why would it fail, and what if anything should I do about it?

Okay, that's really 4 questions.
