Another anti-virus product is installed, but no Sophos Anti-Virus Competitor List.txt produced

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition. When I run escw_90_sa_sfx.exe, it installs and I get the "Welcome to the Sophos Endpoint Security and Control installation wizard".

I go through that, choosing to install Client Firewall as well and choosing Remove third-party security software (although not choosing these makes no difference). And we get to, "The installation wizard is now ready to install..."

I then get a message saying "Another anti-virus product is installed. Sophos Endpoint Security and Control cannot be installed until this product is removed."

As far as I know, I have removed any other anti-virus product. Help files told me to look for a file called "Sophos Anti-Virus Competitor List.txt", but this is not to be found. I guess this is a registry key issue, but do not know how to proceed.

(I've tried with and without the Firewall in Windows Security Centre turned off.)

  • I've run into situations where something is being detected by the CRT and all attempts to find the offending fragment are futile.

I'm pretty sure this is a last resort type option, but it is documented in the Sophos knowledgebase. If you are absolutely certain the other product has been disabled or removed:

    HKLM\Software\Sophos\SAVService\SetupOptions\SuppressCompetitorDetection
You can add this key, with a string value (REG_SZ type) and a value of 1 to stop the Sophos Competitor Removal Tool from running on deployment.

    HKLM\Software\Sophos\SAVService\SetupOptions\SuppressPreSAVCDT
You can add this key, with a string value (REG_SZ type) and a value of 1 to stop the Sophos Competitor List Check from running on deployment.

When set to zero, this key checks for competitor security software and reports on its presence, but does not attempt removal.
