old EM 4.0 to 4.5 failed on an upgraded installation - solved

Hi,

I have needed two attempts to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.5.

Our server has been in production since the end of 2005, so it has lived through EM 2, 3.x and 4.0. The DBMS was initially MSDE as this is what the first version of EC installed, and it was later on automaticall upgraded to 2005 Express Edition.

The DBMS-instance did still hold the databases SOPHOS3 and SOPHOS4. In this configuration, the upgrade failed. The SOPHOS45-database was created, but the installer would not fill it, instead claiming a problem with the database creation.

I rolled the full system back to the state it was before the installation, dropped the old DB SOPHOS3 and - just to make sure - also deleted the MDF and LDF of SOPHOS3.

Now, the upgrade worked: SOPHOS45 has been created and is filled, the server seems to work just fine.

Since there is no automatic disposal of an old Sophos-DB from the DBMS after a successful update, this might happen to other customers as well. My suggestion would be that this gets documented or the installer upgraded so it is able to cope with this scenario.

Best regards,

Detlev

  • Yes, I did. Unfortunately, my first attempt was at the beginning of July (1 week before my summer vacation), and I do not remember the exact output, but it was just about missing components like Windows Installer 4.5 which would be automatically installed.

Does the Upgrade Advisor store the logs anywhere else so I might still access and post them?
