Large $$$ files

I am the IT manager for an Educational Institute.

Last night there were some error messages in the Event Viewer logs relating to virus scanning on one server (Windows Server 2003). As a result 5 or 6 large files with a $$$ extension were left in the Documents and Settings\Application data\Sophos\Temp folder. These were all over 2GB in size (can't get the actual error at the moment as I am restarting that server)

Sophos AV version is 7.6.15

sophos anti Virus service now will not start again.

any idea what would cause this. I was thinking to just delete these $$$ files and see what happens. Is this OK?

  • Hi ggriffiths,

I will assume that you've logged a support call to deal with the issue of the SAV service not starting, as this shouldn't be caused by big files in the temp folder, so I'll just explain about the files themselves.

The $$$ files appear when we scan archive files and other complex data. The files are usually deleted once the scan completes, but every once in a while they don't get removed.

It's just fine to delete those files -- but beware that they do need to be there during a scan, so don't set up a script to automatically delete them when they appear!!

    Hope this helps!

  • Note: There's an excellent(*) article Sophos Anti-Virus: the Sophos Temp directory is full of $$$ files.

(*) I like the wordings: is full of ("Oh my God, it is full of $$$ files" - David Bowman), you have lots of files with ... and: In the unexpected event that these files remain (not In the unlikely event though) - now it is very likely that I only found them because they remained ... but that's probably nitpicking :smileywink:

By the way - has the service not starting issue been solved?
