EM Library (Console)

Just a question, Im fairly new to Sophos. I currently have a sophos Enteprise console and EM Library console setup on an older server.

I just installed the latest version on a new server. And I will be transferring everything over from the old server to the new one using the proedures on this website.

My question is, how can i open up the the EM Library console, when I try to create a new mmc snap-in , the sophos library isnt an option on the list. And ive noticed this new version doesnt have the "Libraries" link on the dashboard as the old one does.

Ive looked on this website and couldnt find anything. how can I launch or create this EM Library Console?

thanks

  • You have SEC3.1 and EM Library on the old server and SEC4 on the new one? In SEC4 EM Library is replaced by SUM (Sophos Update Manager) and the download process is managed within SEC (Update managers).

And I will be transferring everything over from the old server to the new one I'm not sure I get what you are up to. Looks like you're trying to move to a new server and upgrade SEC at the same time. While you can perform the upgrade from the SOPHOS3 to SOPHOS4 database on the new server you can't "move" the EM Library settings this way. Haven't done it so I just have to guess - you'll end up with updating policies pointing to your EM Library CIDs. You'd then configure the (new) SUM accordingly and create the corresponding updating policies. You clients will appear managed but unconnected (since they are talking to the old server). If you have exported/imported the Sophos Certification Manager keys before install of the new server you could customise your old CIDs to instruct the clients to talk to the new server - otherwise you'll have to reprotect them using the new console.

Another scenario is: install SEC3.1 and EM Library on the new server, export/import you old data and upgrade to SEC. This is described in article 28276.

  • thanks, actually, now it looks as if im going to go with a fresh install, start from scratch. is the SUM better/easier to use than the EM library? according to your taste of course

  • You're welcome

is the SUM better/easier to use than the EM library? according to your taste of course

SUM is integrated into SEC and management is a lot easier - even more so if you have additional SUMs (child libraries). It makes configuring the update policies a lot easier - but there is a price: disk space.I can give you some more details if you want.

  • yeah any info would be great. I havent started using SUM yet.

actually, im still looking some info on how to get SUM started and working with it going forward. not much good sophos documentation on it out there. from what i can find.

  • In the early days when I have been new to Sophos I also had problems with the documentation. Soon found out that it is sufficient in a sense: If you're a beginner it's all you need to begin - otherwise a even a detailed documentation wouldn't help much as long as you're not familiar with the workings.

SUM is not a problem, less so if you are rather new and not a long time EM Library user :smileywink:

If time and resources permit I suggest that you set up a small test environment. There's . You won't need server hardware and you can freely move selected clients if you use the same certification manager keys. Just point to updating policy to the new (or old) CID (dunno if clients still "downgrade" to SAV7 as they did some time ago).
