Upgrade Endpoint Computers from 9.0.5 to 9.5.1

We are testing the upgrade from Sophos version 9.0.5 to version 9.5.1.  We ran the Upgrade Advisor Tool and followed the instructions.  Everything went smoothly according to the directions for our Enterprise Console (from version 4 to version 4.5) and Database upgrade.

Upgrading an Endpoint Computer took us 3 hours though.  We have many mobile users (laptops taken home and powered down during the evening hours).  So many users would receive their new Updating Policy during the business day even if applied at the end of one business day.  Also, due to “green” initiatives, many computers are powered down overnight and would also receive theirs during the business day.  This upgrade could impact the users during those 3 hours it takes to upgrade.

How has this upgrade gone for other companies?  Has anyone had any issues with upgrading their Endpoints?  Is this a normal amount of time for this upgrade on the Endpoint Computers?

  • Hello NancyV,

If you assign a new policy it takes some time until a client reports Same as policy. With the next update the client will start the upgrade process and eventually report SAV 9.5.1 and the Restart needed ... warning.

    - First steps depends on RMS - if the server can notify the client it's only a short time.

    - Second step takes no longer than your updating interval (and half of it on average)

-The final one (excluding the reboot) a few minutes. Just changed the updating policy for some 50 clients (SAV only, no SCF) and it took no longer than 15-20 minutes until all were on 9.5.1 (update interval 10 minutes). Most users don't even notice the upgrade and I haven't received any complaints.
