Licensing question for generic AD accounts

We have just migrated to Sophos Cloud. We have 37 employees so I purchased 40 licenses to account for some growth. However, I also have several generic AD accounts for conference rooms, training computers, etc, but these accounts are only used by employees. These are consuming a license as well and putting me over my 40 license limit. My understanding is that we license for number of actual users (i.e., employees), which is well under the 40 limit. Is there a way to deal with this in Sophos Cloud?

  • Hi Greg.  My understanding is that the license count is measured by logged in user (not employee).  Not sure your environment, but is it possible for users to use their own AD account on the shared PCs?  This would reduce the total count of licenses used (as well as provide possible accountability for actions taken on the computer).  If that isn't an option, you might need to reach out to your account rep to see what they can do.  Hope this helps.

  • While it would be nice to have individual logins in these situations, it isn't always reasonable with how those locations function.

I did find a resolution to the issue. All you do is associated the domain login (i.e., domain\user) with an existing user that is licensed. That will effectively consolidate the multiple domain logins to a single AD account. I was able to tie my generic AD accounts back to my account and reduce my used licenses down to the correct quantity. I did verify that this process is ok with Sophos as I have more licenses than I have employees.
