Cloud endpoint protection Licencing on VM's

A client is looking at moving to Sophos Clound endpoint protection, as well as a number of laptops, they have three physical servers. One of the physical servers is runnning VMware with 3 or 4 VM's that are runnning 100% of the time, and a handfull of VM's that are stoodup/down as required.

How many endpoint licences do they require? do we need a licence for every configured VM or for every running VM?

Does the Vshield endpoint protection product make any difference to the way licencses are managed (we are not doing any desktop virtualisation, just server).

Cheers

Charles

  • Until the server protection feature (around September) there isn't a "per server" cloud license (as there is with the on-premises product; note that this costs around 10x a user license).

So, in the meantime Cloud customers with more than 25% servers to users need to buy additional users to drop the server % below 25% again.

Using your example, this means that for their 29 servers they need to have 29x4 = 116 user licenses, to be able to add on the 29 servers (= 145 licenses total) while fitting within the 25% rule. The 7 actual users are covered within the 116 licenses for users, so the total remains 145 licenses for your specific example.

We appreciate this isn't simple or intuitive, so a key part of the server protection feature is to address the licensing mechanism, as we expect it to become much more common to see customers with all/predominantly servers.

    Thanks,

    Jon
