Sophos Endpoint causing network to disconnect when transitioning from wired / wireless

Sophos Endpoint running reliably in our environment for 5-ish years. There is a message / cache server on-prem that supports our clients, and we've had no major issues. All Dell Latitude / OptiPlex equipment. In this specific example, I'm using a Latitude 7440 laptop, WD22TB4 dock, and updated drivers and firmware.

In the last 6-8 weeks we have received numerous complaints of slow network and network disconnects (delays) when users go into conference rooms or connect at their desk. Scenario: Laptop working fine, unplug dock and walk to conference room. Wireless connects but no traffic passes for two minutes. After two minutes, network works as expected. User walks back to desk, plugs in dock, computer shows wired connection, and user loses connectivity for 2 minutes. After two minutes, machine works as expected.

If I uninstall Sophos Endpoint and restart the machine, the problem 100% goes away. Transitions between wired and wireless are as smooth as they were 6-8 weeks ago. As soon as I reinstalled Endpoint, the 2 minute delay comes back.

Anyone else experiencing this?

  • I am not. Peripheral Control is set to Monitor but do not block.

A colleague alerted me to a similar problem with STAS posted on a different group, so this morning I disabled STAS and re-tested. Connectivity is working as expected when shifting between wired and wireless. Additionally, the timing works out to approximately the time that we started to rely a little more on STAS rules.

So, I owe him a thank you, and at this point, I think we've figured out that STAS is the issue. We will likely engage support to help with the STAS problem.
