PC cannot connect to any wi-fi - Sophos Endpoint is not allowing it.

Hi everyone,

Two PCs in the organization I manage can no longer connect to any wi-fi(office, home or hotspot).

The users reported that the issue started on Thursday 16/06/2022. They were suddenly disconnected from the wi-fi they were connected to, and from tat time could no longer reconnect, or connect to any other wi-fi.

I have reset the wi-fi adapter, and attempted to update(using a LAN cable for internet connection) – but Microsoft reported that the driver is up to date.

However, after i uninstalled Sophos Intercept X Endpoint that was running on both PCs, they could connect to any wi-fi normally as before, but upon re-installation of the Endpoints, the issue came up again.

I formatted one the PCs and reloaded the Operating System. It could connect to wi-fi, but once I installed the Sophos Endpoint, it could no longer connect, - “Can’t connect to this network” is the message displayed after entering the wi-fi password.

I connected a USB wi-fi adapter(manufactured by Realtek) on one of the PCs, nd the PC could connect to wi-fi normally with it.

The PC model is HP 250 G2

OS is Windows 10 Pro

The wi-fi adapter model is QCWB335(written on the adapter card)

The wi-fi manufacturer is Qualcomm Atheros

*But the driver installed for it by Microsoft which had been working is Qualcomm-Atheros-QCA9565, as seen in Device Manager

I am suspecting that that there must have been an update from Sophos that is causing this abnormal behaviour, because all other systems in the organization are working fine right now.

I need help to fix this as soon as possible.

Thanks

  • Got solution permanently, testing done. working fine...

    thank u Sophos team..

  • Dear John, what was the permanent solution you got? is it disabling IPS as KB-000044292 or Sophos has fix the issue?

  • Sophos has given the fix for testing, it worked. soon we can expect the update.

  • Maybe sophos should think about the possibility to roll back updates (via the console or locally) as it is in other antivirus products

  • dear all, is Sophos has released the permanent fix for this issue or still only workaround?

  • It has been 10 days since this workaround has been published, why is there stil no fix?

  • Terrible support! How much time has passed, and no solutions!!!!!!

According to the case, they write the same thing, it’s probably not a person, but a bot is sitting there. They write to give diagnostic reports, I can’t answer because the device is remote and there is only one wi-fi adapter and the user cannot connect to the Internet for the policies to apply, and plus he is not yet an administrator to uninstall Sophos. But support writes and wants reports (((….., a clear mistake on their part and no deadlines for a solution, everything goes to the fact that the company will look for an alternative product if it goes on like this.

Now there are many devices on the market that have only one wi-fi adapter and Sophos with its updates broke it and is in no hurry to solve the problem…………………….((

  • Apologies for the frustrations, I can assure you our Support personnel are all human. Looking into your support case, it looks like our team is trying to get the relevant logging information in order to escalate your case to our L3 teams for further investigation alongside our development team.

This issue is actively being investigated by our development teams at the moment. From some of the notes I was able to find, I suggest trying the following.
    - Bypass Tamper Protection on the affected device
    - Toggle the slider next to "Network Threat Protection"

If this does not work, you may also need to stop the "Sophos Network Threat Protection" service from the Services menu. Let me know if this works for you. These steps will allow you to connect to the wireless network, after which the Service and protection feature can be re-enabled.

We do not yet have a permanent fix for this issue, though, test builds are actively being worked on and tested with customers.

  • Thanks for the prompt and clear answer!

We are on problematic devices that are remote and have only a wi-fi adapter, without the ability to connect a network cable, we say the key for protection and then we say the administrator password so that the user can uninstall Sophos, after which the user gets access to wi-fi. After we send the Sophos installation package and with the new policies described above, users can work and connect to wi-fi and through VPN to the corporate network, then we change the administrator password. This is the situation and it is more correct and faster, since it is difficult for users to explain how to restart the necessary services without administrator rights.
