Sophos Anti Virus - Reinstall because of computer name change ?

We are considering going with Sophos as a solution for our systems. I am told that once you install the client on the computer that the computer name can not be changed or the client becomes an Orphan and you must wipe windows to re-install Sophos. Often workstations in our system will be transferred from department to department and the computer name changes when the computer is re-located. Before we go with this solution I am wondering how we would handle changing computer names after Sophos is installed without corrupting the computer in the database.

  • Hi Floyd,

It's not necessary to wipe the windows when you change the hostname of a certain system. You can proceed with changing the hostname without doing anything on the device itself. This is applicable when the device is being managed via Sophos central. Once you have performed the renaming of the hostname make sure to perform a manual update as well on the Sophos endpoint to push the changes and update the new naming on the central dashboard.
