HELP! Restore OS Partition

Currently, I have a laptop with Windows 7 installed, protected by Sophos SafeGuard. I booted into a Live Linux CD to do a few things. While I was in Linux, I made the mistake of trying to format my usb drive to a FAT32 partion. Unfortunately, I hit the wrong partition. I ran the following command:

mkdosfs -F 32 -I /dev/sda1

Unfortunately, /dev/sda1 is my Windows partition! Fortunately, that was all I did. Didn't try to copy any files or anything. Exited Linux and tried to boot into Windows as normal. BIOS loads, then SafeGuard loads. I am then greeted with a message that SafeGuard cannot find a bootable disk. Please tell me this is recoverable!

I have tried booting back into Linux and using TestDisk to change the partition type of /dev/sda1 to NTFS, but that did not work.  Any ideas?

  • Hi aus_,

if possible, create a sector based copy of your harddisk first, before you attempt any recovery steps!

Since the partition type was already reverted back to NTFS, I would suggest you to download the bootable recovery media for your SafeGuard version from the following KBA: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/108805.aspx and try to repair the boot sector of your partition:

To do so, boot the affected machine from the recovery media and start the "SGN BERestore" tool from the quick launch bar. Switch to the "Boot sector" tab, select "Select a partition to repair boot sector" and choose the partition where your Windows boot sector is located.

Restart the machine and logon to your system.

Should that not help you to access the system again, you might need to prepare and run a recovery software, that is able to restore your filesystem structure.

Please let me know if the bootsector repair did solve your problem already or not.

    Regards,

    Chris
