What is the difference between a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0? Will USB 2.0 ports support USB 3.0 portable drives or pen drives?

Yes, USB3 is fully backward compliant for USB2 devices (and USB 1.2 for that matter) The drives/pen drives would only run at the best possible speed for USB2 (480Mbs) where as (in theory) USB is 10x faster.
