Sophos Complete Security Suite

We are currently using an AV suite from another company.  I just wanted to ask your opinion on the above security suite as it is one of the products we are evaluating.

- how efficient is it in catching virus, malware and adware

- how is it affecting the performance of both the server it is installed in and the user's machines

- how manageable is it as far as pushing to new machines

- can I install the Enterprise Console in a VM

I may have some more questions in the future.

Thanks..

  • Hello, I have just installed the anti-virus for Macs. When I look at my SEC, I don't see the Mac from the main window. In the Managed Computers section, I still am seeing two; the server and the XP laptop.

  • Regarding the Patch Assesment feature, does it only detect the patches that need to be downloaded and installed on a machine or are the patches available directly from SEC? We are currently using Trend Micro for our AV needs and Lumension for pushing out patches. I am trying to find out if a single product(Sophos) can do these two tasks. Thanks..

  • Hello dohc97,

if you install from the CID the Mac should call back to the console. /Library/Logs/SophosMessageRouter/NetworkReport contains ReportData.xml which gives you the same information as View Network Communications Report on Windows does. Check for any errors, Parent addresses should contain the server's address(es) and name(s), Current parent address should not be empty and you should be able to connect to ports 8192 and 8194 of this address from the Mac.

  • As it is Patch Assessment and not Patch Management it just detects and categorizes missing patches.

  • I am not really sure what the CID is. I installed the MAC anti-virus manually on the Mac itself. I can see that it got installed and that I can scan the machine. I checked the log, ReportData.xml but it is empty. Also, I am not sure what is a Parent Address and Current Parent Address. Keep in mind that I am not familiar with your product and am trying to demo this for possible deployment in our organization.

  • Hello dohc97,

a CID is a Central Installation Directory (aka update location) - e.g. \\yourserver\SophosUpdate\CIDs\Sxxx\SAVSCFXP for Windows and \\yourserver\SophosUpdate\CIDs\Sxxx\ESCOSX for the Macs - the latter contains Sophos Anti-Virus.mpkg for installing on Macs. Did you use this package or the stand alone installer?

Oh - and I'm not Sophos (nor affiliated other than being a customer's employee and member of this forum) so it is not my product :smileywink:
