SD-RED 20 3G/4G expansion module

SD-RED20, connects via ethernet without issue to XGS.  4G module is for backup purposes, or disaster recovery.

I have purchased the OEM Sophos 4G module with a Sierra wireless modem.  I ordered a Sim card from Verizon and verified that even thought it says 5g, it will function with a 4G modem, per VZ.  I also called VZ and asked them if they could see modems # as active.  They said YES, and then said they needed to activate and asked me for the IMEI of the modem.  I power cycled the RED and it connected via ethernet.  I unplugged the ethernet cable and NO Tunnel.

What does the LED on the back of the modem do?  It is steady green.  What does this mean?

Verizon sent a paper which contained a mobile # and and user name.  NO Password, NO APN, NO PIN.

Is there anyone in the US who has 4G expansion module working with RED and Verizon?   Any help appreciated.

I can't find official Sophos documentation on how to properly configure 4G expansion module.  In the USA we have 3 primary carriers, ATT, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

I would think that documentation and notes for each carrier would be a GOOD idea so that customers could get their devices working without calling support, and getting frustrated.  The examples of support that I have found so far for 4G expansion have been here by fellow users.  THANK YOU.

About ready to send 4G expansion module back to Sophos.

  • Case successfully resolved with Sophos Level 2 support.  Thank you.

This is what I have learned -

    1.  Better instructions & documentation needs to be created for this module and how it works in the RED, XGS and backend management by Sophos, which cannot be changed without assistance from support.  This issue could EASILY be remedied with a 5 min YouTube video, showing unboxing, sim chip install, plugging into red, config on XGS, etc.

    2.  I learned that when I first installed it, prior to creating this case, that the module had logged into the Verizon network and contacted my XGS.  I am guessing that I did not have enough patience or perhaps I did not have the user/pw or APN set correctly and the 4G connection would not properly connect to XGS.  Once again, a docs could go a long way.

    3.  I disconnected RED and it went offline for several days.  -- NOT GOOD.  This put the RED into Lockdown.

    4.  If your RED is disconnected for too long as a security measure, Sophos provisioning service will auto-Lockdown.  You must call Sophos support so that the RED will function again.  (I was unaware of this).

    5.  This is what your SD-RED 20 will look like, (Flashing Lights) when it is connected via LTE / Cellular
