Fail to install Sophos XG (Home Edition)

Hello,

I'm trying my best to boot the installer of Sophos XG Home Edition version SW-19.5.0_GA-197.iso from a 8GB USB 2.0 stick on my Intel i3-1115G4 CPU with 8 GB RAM but can't seem to find a way to properly boot the Installer

I tried Etcher on MacOS and Rufus in ISO and DD mode on Windows 10. None of them did a difference

I read about the BIOS Legacy boot mode, but the GRUB loader only seems to boot while on UEFI. Did some tests with the CSM settings. Whatever I do, the USB stick isn't recognized while using Legacy setting

Here's some of my BIOS settings :

The only thing in CSM I kept UEFI is the Video since the HDMI signal isn't working in Legacy mode

Is there anything you could tell to help me navigate in this difficulties?

Thanks in advance and regards!

  • Hi,

you will not need or use two disks after installation. Please try enabling usb mass storage,

  • Thanks for the quick reply Ian!

I did tried a SSD in case the problem was due to the NVMe drive. Was planning to remove the SSD when the installation would be successful of course!

For the USB Mass Storage, I did try it Enabled as well. I switched between Auto, HDD and CD/DVD but it didn't made a difference

    Any other cues maybe?

  • The GRUB’s boot process worked in UEFI up to the "SFOS INSTALLER" message being stuck on screen. An underscore (_) was often shown as well

  • Neither product however (XG or UTM) supports UEFI and it WILL fail.  What exactly is the issue you are having?  Can you give a screenshot of the error? What hardware is this on?  A NUC?  Custom built PC? Some hardware won't even allow XG or UTM to install right.

  • Sounds more like the USB device is not recognised by the BIOS rather than a software installation issue? Do you have a dvd burner to try or even a different USB stick without formatting to see if it is recognised.

  • Hi

The hardware is a fanless PC with these specs :

It’s hard to document the problem since it’s often a black screen with and without an underscore, that’s all

When the BIOS settings allow the GRUB boot, the boot goes to "SFOS INSTALLER" ans stuck there

I wish it can be useful for you! Thanks

  • further issue, those i225 nics are not supported, neither are i219 nor i226 series.

  • The NIC in that wont work as well, you will see a lot of UP/DOWN problems and not keep a connection.

It's a UEFI Bios so you will most likely not get this installed right.

Something you could possibly do to make this work is throw Proxmox on it, then install XG as s VM there, but this being your base firewall hardware will be a nightmare.

Another option would be installing something like PFSense.

  • Ohh ok, that’s sad. I really liked the OS and GUI here

Will then go with OPNsense that just work out of the box Slight smile

Thanks for the infos you two!
