SMC App Sync

Hello!

Our company iPhones are reported to us by the system if they don't synchronize with the server since 4 weeks.

We can't ask every user to start the SMC app once a month and then trigger the sync manually.
The SMC app can trigger this automatically, but the background update must be activated and the App must be opened in the taskswitcher.

Is there a way to start the SMC app automatically in the background?
If a user restarts his mobile phone, the SMC app is closed and they can no longer synchronize itself. Is there a solution for this?

How did you solve the problem?

  • Hi Andreas,

The SMC app is supposed to sync every 24 hours. But indeed, it can happen that the SMC app gets closed on an iOS device and therefore can no longer sync. There is no way to enforce the iOS device to keep it running under very circumstances. But fortunately, iOS has a built-in MDM client which synchronizes every 24 hours with its configured MDM solution which is, in this case, Sophos Mobile. This way we can ensure that iOS devices stay in sync.

  • Hi Haridoss and thanks for your response!

So this built-in MDM client synchronizes with our Sophos backend even though the „Control“ App is not launched in the background? Would you please explain how to enable and configure the built-in client? We are getting regular notifications about devices being out of sync and I don‘t want to ask our users to always ensure the „Control“ App is active in the background.

    Thanks / kind regards

    Andreas

  • Hi Andreas,

The built-in MDM client is always active on iOS devices and synchronizes with the configured Sophos Mobile backend as soon as the device was enrolled and has installed the MDM enrollment profile.
Do you have any compliance settings?

  • Hi Haridoss,

yes we have compliance settings. (german settings)

My main question is, how can we make sure the iphones synchronize themselves? Without the SMC-App must be open? We can't always remind every employee that they should restart this app in every month. This must be easier to solve, right?

    Thank you!

  • Hi Andreas,

Please do make sure that the Background App Refresh is enabled on the iOS device so that you do not have to manually open the SMC app. To do so open "Settings | General | Background App Refreshon the iOS device. Enable the feature and allow the "Controlapp to use it.

Note: This cannot be defined by Sophos Mobile Control. The device owner can activate and deactivate it anytime

Please refer to the article Requirements for the Sophos Mobile Control iOS app to support automatic sync and locate. Let me know if this helps resolve your query.
