setup profile for android

Since there was no real answer to the last thread;

/search?q= 18979

I would like to ask the question again, how do you create profiles or deploy settings such as active sync/wifi/ ect (like on ios) to an Android device?

Cheers

  • Hi Dewk,

for Android it is not possible to deploy ActiveSync or Wifi settings via SMC using profiles.

Unfortunately, each vendor has it's own Android implementation.

Therefore, every vendor specific Android system is different and there is no central way for all vendors to remotely configure the settings you are requesting. Instead, a user has to manually configure it.

    Cheers

  • Hi Stefan,

If that is the case, why are there options to add Wi-Fi and Exchange ActiveSync configurations to an Android profile?  I see Exchange ActiveSync, Wi-Fi, VPN, Root certificate, and Client certificate all as options followed by "SAFEv2+" in a gray dotted box.  As SAFE is SAmsung For Enterprise, I am assuming this is supposed to support the configuration of the profiles at least on Samsung devices.  However, it has not worked on two different Samsung devices we have tried.  Viewing the Installed Profile's settings show the State as "Not supported".

I'm at a loss trying to understand why there would be options to configure Android profile settings that, as you stated, just won't work.  Why are these configuration options available then?  Please help me understand what I'm missing here.

    Thanks!

  • Additionally, pages 71-74 of the 3.5 SMC Administrator's Guide deal with configuring these options.

  • Hi MacGyver,

my original answer was from September 2012 where Sophos Mobile Control 2.5 was the current version.

With Sophos Mobile Control 2.5 it was not possible to deploy W-LAN settings to Android devices.

Since Sophos Mobile Control 3.0 we support the Samsung SAFE API which enables us to define more settings on Samsung devices.
However, the devices must be able to support the Samsung SAFE API. All devices which are SAFE compatibel require the Sophos Mobile Control SAFE Plugin to correctly handle these settings. The SMC client will automatically detect that this plugin has to be installed and asks the user to do so.
Unfortunately, not all Samsung devices are able to use the SAFE API. SAFE devices are e.g. S3, S4, Note 2 or Note 10.1.

Other devices like the S3 mini or the S2 might work as well but with limited functionality.

    Best regards

    Stefan
