Firewall Home Edition on a Shuttle XPC slim DL30N?

Hi, I probably bought a wrong hardware to run Sophos Firewall Home Edition on: A Shuttle Barebone XPC Slim DL30N.

I am not sure, whether or not it supports Legacy BIOS, but possibly not :-/ So here are my questions:

  • I can install the Firewall with Version 21.0.0_GA-169. When I boot, I see the menu, where I can choose the firewall. Choosing that option nothing happens anymore, just a blinking cursor. Does that match to the situation, when the BIOS is wrong (non-Legacy)? Or could that possibly have another issue?
  • Does anybody know, how to bring Sophos Firewall working on a Shuttle Barebone XPC Small DL30N?
  • If not - which I assume: Any suggestions what Intel hardware to use? I like the idea of a barebone - especially because of its flexibility...
-> I do not see on the product sheets an entry whether or not Legacy BIOS is supported...

Thank you very much for any input and kind regards

David

  • Hi,

I can see two issues looking att he specifications.

1/. UEFI BIOS - not supported by current firmware

2/. Intel i226 series NICs - not supported by the current firmware.

You could try installing a VM like proxmox and then install the XG firmware.

    • Hi rfcat_vk

Thank you for your answer. So you don't know, what is the behavior of the Software, if the BIOS is not able to do legacy, right? No problem, after calling around, I got a technician from shuttle and he told me, that the newer machines don't do Legacy BIOS at all anymore.

What confuses me a bit about your post is, that you mention the Intel i226 series NICs are having problems too - because at  https://community.sophos.com/sophos-xg-firewall/f/recommended-reads/137737/sophos-firewall-home I only find, that i219/i225 won't work. So is that particular article wrong?

Proxmox or another virtualization layer makes my setup rather complex to just have a simple home edition of the firewall. What hardware suggestion do you give except Sophos' own hardware? When I buy a box from Sophos I don't see the sense of having to install a seperate firmware on it: Then I would just use the built-in software installed on the box directly with a Home license...
-> But maybe I misunderstand the concept...

Thank you for your answer and for any further inputs!

      • Hi  ,

you can get a used SG/XG-appliance (no XGS!) and you can install Sophos Home on it. At the moment you will find many used appliances because at the end of march all XG appliances are useless cause of the EOL of the licenses.

        • Hi

Thank you very much for your answer. So I can use those devices like a regular x86-device? Put the software on a USB-stick, boot from it and install the software, correct?
-> That would be a liable solution.

You write, no XGS: Because of price? Or what is the reason? rfcat_vk above said XGS118 with SFOS21, XG115 for SFOS20 (that's at least what I understand) - where are those limitations? As I have to work with this anyway, I would rather directly jump to version 21 if possible...

Thank you for your help and kind regards

          • The setup for home (SFOS Software) detects the Hardware as XGS, even if you wipe/replace the original SSD. Therefor only an SG/XG can be used in the case you go for an Sophos appliance, else you can use each x86 Hardware with BIOS.

hint: if you use an XG/SG you first have to wipe or replace the disk otherwise setup detects a hardware Installation of the appliance and wont work.

            • Hi David,

reading some of the recent posts in that KBA, Sophos appear to have added the i219 and i226 series chips. That  might explain why my XGS118 specifications show 2.5gb/s interfaces. My XGS118 connects to my 10gb switch at 2.5gb/s. .

              • Hi , there is one confusing thing to me: You mention in the context of installing Sophos Firewall Home Edition the XGS 118 while Thomas_XG tells me, that the Sophos Firewall Home Edition cannot be installed on an XGS box. Could you clarify a bit more please?

                Thank you and kind regards

                • Hi,

the XGS118 has a full commercial licence, the old XG115 has been converted into a home licence firewall.
