I am trying to set up an ios7 device (ipad) and when i go to the self service portal externally i can register the device and everything will work ok. If I connect internally to try and do the same thing it starts the boot strap and then it goes to the install profile screen , asks for my passcode then fails saying failed to load profile.
I am assuming there is something on the Sophos MDM admin portal which treats internal and external connections differently? Does anyone have an pointers they could give on this?

this sounds strange. Normally, there should be no difference between internal and external network as long as you can reach the Sophos Mobile Control websites. In general you can configure an access list for your self service portal based on IPs but as you stated you can get to the portal, I assume you have not configured anything here.
Have you used the same device for your second test?
Have you removed the mdm_enrollment profile before trying it with the same device?
Also, if you try to use the same device, you should use the "reconfig" possibility in the Self Service Portal or delete the device from the server first. Otherwise it wil recognize that a device with the same device ID already exists on the server.
