rms router name

Dear sophos expert, I'm new comer & i'm happy to join in this forum.

I have a case like this, I have installed sophos to the user client (windows xp) that join to network domain then I've tried to rename old computer name to new name example MIS7 to IT-IDC-001. When I check sophos network communication report it shows no problems detected but on computer details --> RMS Router name shows Router$mis7:72030. it still shows old computer name (mis7). is it cause problem in the future or not? why does it shows old name eventhough i've tried to rename it.  How to change the rms router name in order to same with new computer name?

Regards,

  • Good observation on your side. You're right: Sophos uses the computername at the initial installation to derive certain parameters (like the Sophos Update User and also the RMS routing name... there might be more, but these are the ones which come to my mind). If you change the computername after you've have installed Sophos, it will still have the old the old computername in those parameters.

I'm not sure if it causes problems in the future, but in order to prevent any complications I decided when a computer gets renamed for whatever reason my technicians need to uninstall all 3 Sophos components, reboot the machine and then it gets pushed automatically in our NOVELL environment and Sophos will reinstall using the new computername.

  • Hello and welcome

you see the client reporting correctly to SEC with it's new name, don't you?

Don't worry, you don't need to change the router name (in fact you can't and even if you find out where it is stored you better leave it alone). Or is it offending your eye :smileywink:

  • Dear expert thank you for your suggestions. For example in case if there are more than 250 computers were installed sophos on clients then i've renamed them to new name whether must be unistalled them all to get same rms router name?  i think it takes a long time to uninstall them all :mansad:. any suggestions?

  • Sophos correct me if I'm wrong - it does no harm if the router name is different from the computer name.

But if you feel better if they match there's some good news for you: the name is picked up whenever RMS is installed - but you don't need to uninstall it first. I just checked what happens when I reprotect a computer from the console, try it. And I'm quite sure that an update of RMS  (as will arrive with the 9.5 version) has the same effect.

    By the way: running

    sqlcmd -s server -d SOPHOS4 -Y 40 -Q "SELECT Name, MessageSystemAddress FROM ComputersAndDeletedComputers WHERE MessageSystemAddress LIKE '%'+Name+'%'"

on the server saves you the trouble of visiting the clients to verify it has worked (use NOT LIKE to see the clients where the names still differ).

  • RRR or whoever else can answer,

You mentioned pushing out Sophos in your Novell environment.   Can you elaborate?

We've been running Sophos v7 for the last 3 years.   Upgraded to Enterprise Console 4.5 yesterday, starting to test the update of the endpoint software to v9 today.   Works OK if a teacher logs in (local administrator(.  Doesn't if a student logs in(power user).

On the machines where I tried as a student - I'm now unable to get it re-installed even as a local administrator.   Seem unable to install directly from the CID, either.

How are you rolling it out via Novell?   Zenworks apps?  using an MSI?

    Thanks.
