Scan Stuck

Hi,

I've installed Sophos for Mac this morning and have had a couple of problems...

1st... selected scan local drives and it spent ages just showing calculating. Eventually used force quit.

2nd... it started scanning but appears to be stuck with 2,550,801 files remaining, and i can't restart it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Stephen.

  • Having same problem!

New install of Saphos 8.0.2c today onto MacBook SSD with OSX 10.7.3.

SSD capacity: 120.15 GB with 70.1 GB available

    TimeMachine running to external iOmega

Started scan and Saphos indicated only scanning the MacBook (?)

Screen reads: Scan Local Drives - Scan all files and folders on this Mac. - Calculating...

Blue barbar poll activity icon running and running . . . for over an hour as of this writing.

I assumed Calculating would result in some estimation of run-time, folders count, etc. - Something!

Nothing reported. Mac not hung, can access other parts of system and apps.  Sophos Stop Scan button greys when clicked, but otherwise is not responding.

What should be happening? What is aprox. time for an initial scan?

  • 12:23 PM – Quit Saphos while it was still: “Calculating…”
Later: 2:10 PM – Restarted from Saphos from shield logo & selected Scan Local Drive – Scan now appears to be running normally!
3:46 PM & still running but is displaying a tally of “items remaining” of over 680,000 and declining rapidly.
    4:47 PM finished!

  • Hi,

I'm in the same boat as the other folks but I can't access the suggested link that was provided.  I get an access error when I click on it.

Can anyone offer suggestions as to how to get the scan "un stuck"?  I'm using a MacBook Pro and the scan works fine until I get to 746,540 files remaining.  At that point Sophos just sits there.

    Thanks for any tips

  • This is a really old thread - years old.  The links quoted and products installed have all moved on.

I suggest starting a new thread rather that tack on new information to this one.  To help (before posting again):

    1. Ensure your OS X is up to date.
    2. Ensure you have version 9 of SAV for Mac installed, and it's up to date.
    3. Reboot your Mac.
    4. If you're having problems with scans, start by unplugging (fully removing) external drives (USB, firewire, network, etc) and ensuring Time Machine volumes are disconnected.
    5. Check the main drive with 'Disk Utility' to ensure it's OK.
    6. Have a tidy-up of your files - empty the trash, delete old downloads etc.
    7. Empty your browser's cache.
Note: Points 6 and 7 are just to help reduce the scanning time by not scanning old stuff that's not required.

  • Given the number of issues that people have with scans that hang, and I am one of those people, would someone in tech support at Sophos please take the time to generate  difinitive solutions to this problem? There is are numerous posts suggesting a variety of solutions and, clearly, the success rate is not consistent. Were the infinite scan an uncommon problem perhaps this might be a presumtuous request. However, it's a ubiquidous issue and, frankly it's presumptuous of Sophos to make all of us work so hard to track down information and troubleshoot a problem that ought to be fixed through the GUI of the utility applicaiton. Thank you in advance.

Mac OS 10.8.5 and Sophos 9.1.8

  • Point taken. However, with the frequncy of the problem perhaps some extra effort to document causes and solutions in a systematic way. Right now we are forced into a perennial hit or miss mode. Some of the most promising solutions seem to require accessing the OS though the Console program. That generally means that there should be a button in the GUI given expereince with other such issues.

    Thanks
