Trying to install onto second hand UTM 220

Hi,

I've been using the software version on a VM for years but now I've bought a second hand UTM 220 with no HDD. I've put in a 250GB desktop PC HDD and it all seems to boot OK, BIOS looks all present and correct but I simply can't install the hardware or software versions of UTM. I've only tried the latest build 9.503-4.1 so far.

Hardware: Installation runs through OK, but on first boot it hangs on press F2 splash screen. Connecting a keyboard and pressing F2 a few times I get an error where it can't mount the file system referring to a promise_fasttrack_raid_member:

I have tried connecting the HDD to all three SATA connectors, changing all the IDE settings in the BIOS but it never has got past this point (or I get no UTM hardware detected).

For the software version, I get an error during install that you cannot install the software version onto Sophos UTM hardware and I have to use the hardware version.

Any tips?

Cheers,

Steve

  • Steve, you will need to start by wiping the drive.  I guess there's something from the attempt to install from the hardware version on the drive.

Without the /etc/asg file that was on the original hard drive, you won't be able to install the hardware version, so you'll have to use the software ISO.

  • Hi Bob

Thanks for your reply - I assumed the installation would wipe the hard drive, but it seems it doesn't! Just stuck another drive in and did the software install and it has worked perfectly.

  • Hi Bob I have just had a simular issue with a UTM220 and failed HDD is there any way of getting a copy of this file, I have done a install with the asg disk rather than ssi disk and the display doesnt work and eth ports are in a different order

    Thanks
