Sophos Central Wireless – January Update

The wireless product team is pleased to announce a release update for Central Wireless that is now available in Sophos Central. This Central Wireless update focused on changes to the wireless SSID creation process, the Mesh SSID creation process, and workflow improvements for both areas.

Central Wireless SSID Workflow Enhancements

Separate Buttons for SSID Creation

On the SSIDs page, we’ve added separate buttons to create an SSID for AP6 series access points or APX series access points.

Clone for AP6 Selection

For customers with existing APX SSIDs who are looking to add or upgrade to AP6 access points, we’ve added a “Clone for AP6” option for existing APX SSIDs. This offers a quick way to create the SSIDs needed for your newly deployed AP6 access points.

Existing APX SSID policies are not available for assignment to the AP6 access points because of differences in wireless settings, the “Clone for AP6” offers a way to quickly create a new AP6 SSID policy with the same SSID name. This allows the APX and AP6 access points to broadcast the same SSID.

For details on deploying AP6 and APX access points in the same wireless network refer to https://support.sophos.com/support/s/article/KBA-000008455?language=en_US#:~:text=This%20article%20provides%20a%20high-level%20overview%20of%20recommendations,6%20is%20the%20latest%20generation%20of%20Wireless%20LAN.

Password Recovery for the Local AP6 Administrator Account

From Central, you can now recover the local admin password for AP6 access points. The “Recover password” button is found under the individual AP6 access point management page in Sophos Central.

Central Wireless Mesh SSID Workflow Enhancements

The team has streamlined the process where radio and SSID incompatibilities may cause issues when assigning the Mesh SSID to access points (Root and Nodes). The Central updates ensure that any necessary configuration changes are clear to the administrator with new messages while decreasing the need to navigate away to different pages to address conflicts.

Create Mesh SSID Button

On the SSIDs page, we’ve added buttons to create a Mesh SSID for AP6 Series access points or APX Series access points.

Mesh SSID Basic Settings Changes

When you create a Mesh SSID the SSID name has been changed and moved to the bottom of the page. The name change is from SSID to Backhaul SSID. The name change was made to make it clear the Mesh SSID being created is only for access points configured in the Mesh Network and will not provide wireless clients connectivity. To provide wireless clients connectivity to the access points, a separate non-mesh SSID must be created and assigned to all access points in the Mesh network.
