Sophos XG behind/ parallel to WLAN Router, Setup? Bridge Mode?

hi community,

i have a vodafone station wlan router/ modem and want to setup a spare pc in order to run sophos xg home.

is there a possibility to run the sophos xg parallel (behind) the wlan router in order not to change the wlan router settings?

i would prefer not to change the wlan router into bridge mode, but let it run as my wlan router and connect my wlan devices to that wlan router.

how would i implement the sophos xg? i can setup it into bridge mode, but i do not want to set up another wlan access point behind the sophos xg.

can i setup the sophos xg so that i intercepts the traffic in bridge mode, whilst the wlan devices keep connecting to the wlan router? or is that not possible?

setup:

wlan router/modem lan port <-- sophos xg (bridge mode?)

^
wlan devices

or do i have to change it to:

router/modem lan port (deactivate wlan) <-- sophos xg (bridge mode?) --> spare wlan ap <-- wlan devices

i want to use the sophos for web filtering and firewall

  • Hi.

If you want to use the web filtering, then you need to use Sophos Firewall as gateway mode and there's no need to change settings on your wlan-router the diagram will be something like this:

And make things like configure web policy and add it to a Firewall rule, setting DHCP on Interface configured to WIFI zone, and stuff like that.

    • Thank you for your answer. The AP cannot stay integrated in the wlan router and the sophos catches all traffic "parallel"? I have to use a seperate wlan AP, right?

      • In order to sophos firewall can filter web traffic you need to setting in gateway mode, and yes, you have to use a separate wlan (wifi zone on sophos xg) for AP
