Admin Password issues XG135

Driving me nuts.

Love this firewall so far...when I can login. First got it a few days ago. Changed the admin password. Then it wouldn't work. Yes, I tried both with and without Caps Lock just in case I screwed that up. Reset router. (Love how I can plug a monitor and keyboard in and get to console. Very cool).

Ran through again. Set password. It worked...until today. For no reason I can see it just stopped working. Back to console. Reset password. Success. Verified password several times by going through the menus and being asked to login again.

Go back to web interface: password or username incorrect.

Am I not doing this right?

  • I am having kind of related issue with our XG115. Somehow the admin password just stopped working and we had to reset via console. This is after upgrading the firmware. I have another device the Admin password just stopped working and this device is 200 miles away from me and no we didn't do anything with this firewall LOL.

    • I keep resetting via console and web admin refuse to let me in... I do not want to reset it yet again. I finally have it dialed in.

      • Found this and go into it:

        https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/123732

Did that. Works in console. Does NOT work in web admin.

        • Never saw such an issue. Maybe you use in console an EN layout and in login screen another keyboard layout?

          Could be an issue.

Also do you use the password complexity settings and Block login?

          • Thanks.

I'm not sure what complexity is set to since I currently cannot login to the webadmin. I think I left all that unchecked for now. So I did just try going into Console and making a very complex password that ticks all those boxes. Tested on the console. Rebooted. Went to web admin. Login failed.

I was planning to install it this weekend but I'll have to hold off now.

I'll do yet another factory reset on Monday if there are no more ideas by then.

I appreciate everyone trying to help.

            • So I'm on my 5th or 6th Factory Reset here.

Reset. Start the wizard. Change the password. Configure the utm. Reboot. And the password I just configured doesn't let me into web admin.

              Tried again. Same result.

Tried again. This time leaving all security features off and checking 'download firmware' which it seemed to do. Reboot. Same result.

This last time I Reset. Configured. Let the ip address at 172.16.16.16 and... it worked.

Logged in. Poked around. Made sure password complexity defaults off. It does. Changed the ip to 192.168.1.1..... Switch my laptop to that range. Tried to login...

              FAIL

              Make any sense to anyone?

              • I can't believe I'm the first person to ever have this problem?!? Of course I am...

Just confirmed again. Reset. Reconfigured. Did not change IP. Rebooted. Able to login.

Change IP. Reboot. Unable to login to Web Admin.

Login to console. Change IP addy BACK to 172.16.16.16 from there. Reboot.

                Guess what? Logged. Right. In.

Half tempted to reconfigure my network on 172 at this point. 40 some endpoints, 5 static ips... No... I shouldn't have to do that.

Can I download and install a previous firmware? That's my next plan. /Goes off to figure that out...

                • Can i ask a "Silly" Question?

Is there another XG in your network with the IP Address, which you always try to configure? Sounds like you are not logging into the correct appliance?

You can use the Shell to confirm some points.

Login on the shell and perform a tcpdump on Port 4444 (Advanced shell 5 - 3 //  tcpdump -ni any port 4444  )

Do you see the request of your client after changing your IP ?

                • I had the same issue after upgrading to 17.5 with the default password. I just plugged in a keyboard and a monitor and I was able to access the console with the password that wasn't working on the web interface! Really weird. I just changed  the password to the same old one and I was able access the web console without having to reboot anything.

                • I'm so embarrassed.

But I'll fess up and post my solution in case someone else has this issue. :\

I opened a ticket with Sophos. They called me.

20 years experience in IT, used a Netgear Business class router before this, and a Fortinet before that. I'm no stranger to routers.

Guy connected to my PC. Show him what I'm doing. He says: OK go up to the address bar.

                  OK

Click at the end of the address. Type :4444

And it worked... I did NOT know there is a separate login for the admin and 'normal' users.
