IOS Locate function

Hi all,

I'm running SMC 3.5 on prem. I'm having some difficulty getting the IOS locate function working. I've checked the following as per the admin guide:

1. as the administrator, locate is enabled in settings

2. under the site settings, locate is enabled in the ios client tab

3. on an enrolled device, location services are on and the SMC app is activated and authorised.

I can locate my android devices without any issues, but for IOS devices the link just doesn't appear on the device properties.

I'm pulling my hair out trying to work this out. As far as I can tell, I've followed the admin guide to the letter, and the system just hates me.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks, Steve

  • Hi Sark1982,

to get the location of iOS devices, you must have installed the Sophos Mobile Control app for iOS which can be downloaded via iTunes. Once the app is installed the users must allow the app to use the location of the device.

Furthermore, you must have enabled the iOS client localization on the SMC server at "Settings | iOS Client".

There you can define the radius the device may move until it reports the new position to the SMC server.

Be aware that a lower radius might consume more battery.

From your description it sounds as if everything looks good and the location should be reported correctly.

Is it perhaps possible that the localisation of devices is disabled for administrators?

in the list of devices properties, is there a field called 'location'?

With iOS 7 and Sophos Mobile Control 3.6 we will be able to trigger the location similar to the way we do on Android.
However, the app must be in the so called "App switcher" of the iOS device (can be accessed by pressing the home button twice).

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards

  • Hello

I've experienced the following with the location services.

On Android, if you request the Device Location the Device loads up and the location is sent, great just who it should be.

On IOS7.1, if the Mobile Control App isn't started the Location Fails, the app has to be started for this to work which is quite a down fall.  I guessing though you need to have the Mobile Control to stay compliant so you could block Active Sync access.

This is my first experience of MDM so I'm not sure if this a requirement of all MDM solutions on IOS

    Thanks

  • After investigating a little more it seems Apple have restricted various API's for example "3rd Party Location" from running outside an APP so the location feature wont work without the app being open.

Hopefully Apple will address this soon

    Thanks

  • Odd, since my testing of the free Meraki MDM allows location to be used.  I do not know why Sophos has issues with this.

  • Hi trabideua,

looking at this knowledge base article from Meraki it seems as if they have the same pre-conditions on iOS which are also valid for our app / solution. They have however added some additional functionality to get the location.

But in general, they are also not using the way Apple themselves use to get the location.

    Best regards
