Endpoint Security & Control cannot contact the Sophos server and update

Hello

Mt Sophos Endpoint S & C has failed to autoupdate itself for a while now. When I try and update it manually it says it is unable to contact the server. Below is a small view from the log that seems to show that SAVXP download from the server failed - I'm not sure what this means. Help!!

  • Hello Ray66,

so your computer is configured to update directly from Sophos (why?) and it seems to work for AU and SCF but not SAVXP. Please check the ALUpdateyyyymmddTtt...tt.log in C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Logs or C:\ProgramData\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Logs) for details. Search for SAVXP, it should be easy to spot the error.

  • Hi Christian

I used to work at Sophos and get Endpoint through a former colleagues friends & family set up. I have no idea why it tries to contact your server! It's updated quite normally for two years but in the past week or so has failed to do so.

I could not find the logs folder btw in the AutoUpdate folder

For Vista and above it 's in %ProgramData% as stated.

It's not my server, BTW :smileyhappy:. But using the GUI you can check what's in Configure updating. - guess it says Sophos there.

  • Hi Christian

OK, I've gone to C: Program Files/Sophos/AutoUpdate and the only things there are folder which are country-specific but no folder called Log. There's also a load of .dll files, some .ppi files, one .dat file, a security certificate and a Certificate Revocation List.

I am unable to find any folder called Program Data, just Program Files. Can you point me in the right direction and tell me what I am looking for when I get there?

Once I've found it - what do I do to make Endpoint update as usual?

    Cheers

p.s. I realise it's not your own, personal server; I used the word 'your' in reference to a server owned by Sophos :smileywink:

  • Hello Ray66,

that's the correct program folder. And if it doesn't contain the folders Cache, Config, data, DefaultConfig and Logs I bet you're running Win 7 (or at least Vista). The ProgramData folder is usually hidden. Now there's many ways to skin a cat ... one way to find what we are looking for is: In explorer Organize->Folder and search options->tab Search near the bottom When searching non-indexed locations check Include system directories. Select the C: drive and type alc.log in the search box. This should give you some hits in the folder we are looking for. Right click and select Open file location. There should be also the ALUpdate logs.

I used the word 'your' in reference to a server owned by Sophos

I thought as much (knowing that the possessive pronoun second person is ambiguous) - I used the phrase "it's not my server" to enunciate that I am not Sophos. But if you insist you can argue: Customers pay for the service provided by "the server" therefore it's to a certain extent their server and in turn me being a customer's representative it's conceivably my server.  :smileywink: :smileyvery-happy:
