Device control failed when checking volume access

I am at a wits end. I have several machines that keep sending the following messages see below:

Device control failed when checking volume access: device name=\Device\CdRom0, errorCode=0x8000ffff.

The crazy thing is after much testing with our local machines. We ended up having to run uninstal run a register cleaner then reinstall again and then it work. Why I don't understand is why is doing this. We are dealing with several messages during the day no to say that some of this offices are in remote offices where we have to go though our vpn tunnel.

Has anyone run into this before. We have Console 4 and endpoint client 9. Workstation OS is Windows 2000.

thank you

  • Any progress or reply on this?  I get exactly same error on test machines.  Have had no reply from Sophos support!

I would be interested to know what you had to uninstall to make it work and for how long does it work?

I suppose I could go back to devicelock.

    • Hi Ilene, Seafish,

Can you both raise this via your personalised Beta feedback URL? We'd like to investigate this issue further.

      Many thanks.

      • I have just turned on Device Control and when I go to block everything it works well, but when I try to put usb devices on read only I get this same message (Device control failed when checking volume access) and the system allows writing to the USB drive. Any new info on this error?

        • We have some fixes coming in the 9.5.3 release which should resolve issues related to this error message. If this release does not resolve the problems you are experiencing then please raise them again with support.

          Best regards,

          • ok I may have hit the accept button too fast is there a way to test the 9.5.3? I have machines that send an email on the hour about the access drive.

              • Has anyone ever found a fix to this? We are now experiencing the same problem where a few PCs are continually reporting the error:

Device control failed when checking volume access: device name=\Device\CdRom0, errorCode=0x8000ffff
