(topic change) Push install will not work across different subnets. Is this possible?

The error Sophos gives is: 0000002e The installation did not start. The computer may have been shut down, renamed or disconnected, or a required service may not be running. It may be running Windows XP Home or Windows Vista.

These machines are XP. The machines on this domain having the problem are able to view our web CID as well as our UNC share. Additionally, I can remotely create scheduled tasks on them using my credentials.

I edited quite a bit out of the logs but hopefully not too much. I'm not entirely sure what's beneficial and what's not.I've tried changing the initial install directory to the FQDN of that same server which made no difference.

As always, any help is much appreciated. This forum has been very helpful so far!

I noticed that I could not hit the administrative share of the machines on the third domain without typing out the FQDN. Is there a way to make Sophos push to the FQDN or do I need to make DNS changes?

HI,

Try updating the list of DNS suffixes and see how that goes, that should append the neccesary parts of the domain name.

I'm going to post a mess of code up here. I tried doing a push with and without the third party removal tool enabled. I manually removed a previous install of Sophos before this latest log.

On the NIC in the Sophos server, my "DNS server addresses, in order of use:" has the two DNS servers from the domain the Sophos server is on and then one domain server of the third domain (the one I can't push to on a different network - domains are trusted).

For the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order) I have:

(1) the domain the server is on

(2) the second domain which is on the same network as the first

(3) the third domain that is on a different network but trusted.

Running:

net helpmsg 66

Gives: "The network resource type is not correct."

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms837640.aspx doesn't exactly give much away maybe Google can help on that one.

Does:
\\GPTEST\C$
now resolve to the taget client and work having made the changes to the DNS suffix list? Until the management server can resolve just GPTEST to the machine I'm not convinced it will work.

Out of interest, you could try importing the computer again with it's FQDN name from a file. Under the file menu on SEC, you can choose import from file. This would be a text based file with the machine name in. The help has info on this but something like:

[TestGroup]

Domain1|WindowsXP|ComputerName1

Save as a .txt.

Where you should enter the short form of the domain as Domain1, you can leave the OS as WindowsXP, that doesn't matter, it will attempt the deployment whatever and then enter the FQDN as the ComputerName1. Once it's imported can you try a protect on that record?

I can resolve \\GPTEST\C$ and other computers on that domain after I added those suffix changes. I tried the import the way you recommended and experienced similar errors.
I'm not sure what's going on. Just recently something else may have changed because I'm trying to deploy to a domain that previously worked and now it's not. Before I kick off a push, I'm warned with this: "You have selected to deploy to some computers with unknown operating systems. We will attempt to protect these with the anti-virus software only."
Additionally, I'm only seeing one domain when I try to do a "Find new computers" and pick the From Active Directory method. So on top of everything else I may have DNS issues.

It turns out that the real problem here is that I can only push to machines that are on the same subnet as the server itself. I'm not sure I have any DNS issues after all. I edited the thread title to reflect that.
I want to point out that Sophos knows that the machines are out there. All machines not sharing the subnet with the server show up with "unknown" operating systems. When I push out to them I get a failure telling me the third party protection couldn't be removed but I doubt it's even getting to that step.

Which could have a number of causes.

I refrained from commenting up to now as I don't have a comparable topology (and I had nothing to add to Jak's replies). I'm not sure if debugging from the server side alone is possible. I'd suggest to break it down starting from the client (if possible).

Create a task on the client with the command (<UNCPathTo>\setup.exe) and parameters as seen in the logs which should run with the credentials used for the push. This should show if it runs at all and if it can successfully complete.

Next (assuming it worked) connect from the server to \\GPTEST\C$ using the same credentials and try to create the same task as before in the \Windows\Tasks folder and run it.

If it worked then creating and running the task a third time but now using schtasks should do as well.

I have no idea what to do next if you get this far :smileywink:

BTW: The known reasons for the Unknown OS are simple filesharing enabled and incorrect credentials/insufficient rights - but I guess you know that (and please forgive the pun)
