Sophos Home License - XGS

At home, I've a Sophos XGS 116 on which I'd like to install the Sophos Home License. I already wiped the SSD completely, but unfortunately I'm not able to install the Software Image on it. Every time when I try to boot from the USB-Stick, following Error Message appears:

-----
Detected Sophos XGS Physical Device.
Please get proper installation source.
timeout: can't execute '/bin/statusled-I2C': No such file or directory
press y to reboot
-----

Does anybody know how to Install the Home License on my XGS 116?

  • Hi,

how did you wipe the SSD? There are hidden partitions which contain the hardware details. The software version of XG does not contain all the functions of the XGS series devices and you would be the first person on the forums to try a software installation on an XGS.

  • possible, you are able to install software while HDD isn't placed within XGS.

Seems there is a marker within BIOS.

  • I removed the SSD and then used Windows Disk Management to delete all the partitions that were displayed.

  • I tried this as a test recently and it doesn't work.

However, the biggest issue is the XGS models use AMD processors and there is currently no support for AMD processors in the Software ISO used for the home license.

  • That is not true. I have successfully used the XG on a PC with an AMD a6-7400k.

You might want to download gParted Live partitioning tool and creating a bootable USB using Etcher or Rufus. Windows is not a suitable environment for partitioning Linux formatted disks.

  • As i pointed out in another thread, AMD processors used by Sophos are X86 compatible.

  • I based this on a response made by . As you say, it doesn't appear to be correct.

Unlike XG hardware, the inability to install Home on XGS is nothing to do with the SSD. You can replace the SSD with a brand new unused, unformatted SSD and you still get the same error. The test Home makes for Sophos hardware is different for XGS hardware and, I would guess based on the BIOS.

No. There have been other people who have posted trying to do this, without success. Nobody has yet identified a way to get around this restriction and is one of the reasons I'm looking at a way to build a hypervisor environment that can be installed unattended (because, of course, there is no GPU on XGS hardware).

  • I never mentioned "AMD" to be unsupported in particular. If i did, it could be a misunderstanding.

As long as the processor is X86 compatible, this works fine.

But the other problem is, you will leave out the NPU completely - NPU is not included in the software installation.

Currently there are no plans to build a new image for Software and XGS Hardware. SFOS Home is solely used for software / virtualization.
