SMTP Issues with Office 365 in SMC

Has anyone heard of this strange issue when using Office 365 as SMC SMTP?

When creating user using (Internal Directory). I receive the message (Welcome mail could not be sent but the user has been saved.  Please resend welcome mail later on.). Strangely, I still receive compliancy report mails. To investigate further while I am in the superadmin SMTP settings. When send a test mail, I get the message (Email could not be sent.). However, if I place the credentials before save button, the test mail successfully sends.

While looking at the Server Log:

Sending test mail after settings are saved:

2015-08-31 15:16:48,984 ERROR [com.sophos.mobilecontrol.server.adminui.settings.SystemSetupSettingsBean] (default task-257) could not send test email for SMTP settings: com.sophos.mobilecontrol.server.mail.MailerException: could not send mail

Caused by: javax.mail.AuthenticationFailedException: 535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful

After creating user:

2015-08-31 15:21:50,903 ERROR [com.sophos.mobilecontrol.server.adminui.internalusers.InternalUserModelManager] (default task-564) could not send welcome mail: com.sophos.mobilecontrol.server.mail.MailerException: could not send

mailCaused by: com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPSendFailedException: 550 5.7.60 SMTP; Client does not have permissions to send as this sender

Thank You all for your consideration :)

  • Hi Fred,

so there are two issues you seem to run into.
    1. After saving the SMTP settings the password field is cleared. When trying to test the connection again, the SMC server does not use the previously configured password. So if you want to retest the configuration you have to enter the password again. This will change with the next version of SMC scheduled for end of this year.

    2. The email which is not send to the user.
The SMTP configuration you do and the user which is configured there is only for the alarm emails. However, the originator of the mails for users can be configured within the actual Sophos Mobile Control customer within the "Email configuration" tab at "System setup | General". Maybe you should enter the same originator here as you did for the "SMTP" tab.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards
    Stefan
