Bypass code for iOS activation lock

Hi,

Apparently since iOS 7.1 Apple has provided a way for MDM solutions to provide an bypass code to clear the activation lock on iOS devices. This is especially usful when a user has return a company device prior to leaving without removing their iCloud/Find My iPhone settings.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5927

In iOS 7.1 or later, you can use a compatible MDM solution to enable Activation Lock when a user turns on Find My iPhone. Your MDM solution can store a bypass code when Activation Lock is enabled and later use this code to clear Activation Lock automatically when you need to erase the device and deploy it to a new user. Refer to your MDM solution documentation for details.

However I am unable to find anywhere in SMC (or online) documentation that indicates how to use this feature.

Please advise.

  • Hi Thomas,

Resetting the PIN is next to useless if you do not have access to a user's iCloud account.

We currently do not stipulate that user must setup a new iCloud account using their organisational email. In fact, we actually say that they can use a preexisting/personal one if they like. This was a problem recently when an employee was dismissed and hadn't cleared his iPhone before returning it. We had to contact him (badger him) and instruct him to do it via iCloud on the web. If he hadn't complied we would have been left with a $600 brick.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Guess I'll log a feature request.

    Thanks,

    Neil
