ActiveSync Woes

So I'm just looking for some advice from some people who have successfully implemented SMC in their workplace. After installation. I am able to register devices and everything seems to be working. I'm a little confused on how the ActiveSync/Email stuff is supposed to work.

Am I supposed to continue using the old ActiveSync URL (webmail.company.org) or am I supposed to be using the URL of the SMC Server (mdm.company.org). According to a KB article it says I should be using the URL of the SMC Server but I am not able to connect. If I connect to the old URL for OWA/ActiveSync then I can't disallow/deny access to non-compliant devices because I believe I am skipping over any Proxy SMC puts in place.

Help!?

  • Thanks so much for the response. I am currently working with Sophos on the issues I have been having.

We are using an Exchange 2003 server running IIS 6.0.

I will get back in touch with Support on this matter.

    Thanks!

  • I was told by Sophos NA that they could not validate this bug claim. Is there anything else I can do? I'm dead in the water right now.

    Thanks.

  • Hi there JHynes. I am just setting my system up too, and have a similar configuration (IIS6, Exchange 2003). I was able to get mail working throught the SMC with a bit of playing around. I ended up editing the database directly, but you I think you should be able to do the same thing through the Configuration Wizard. The path I put in "ActiveSync enabled Exchange Server name" was:

    my.internal.exchnage.server/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync

I also turned off "Use SSL". I know that's not a good final solution, but I'm just testing at the moment. Also, both servers are internal in my network, so SSL is not vital at the moment. Then, I pointed the iPad to the external SMC server address and it worked.

Your server may not have the same "Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync" path, but you should see that in the IIS config. Also, you can test that path straigh from a browser within your network.

Hope this helps, and please post any results or other solutions you find to help out!!

    Cheers,

    Paul.

  • Hi,

We have exactly the same behavior with a customer. He uses Server 2003. Everything works except for the Active Sync. Should I open a case or do we have to wait here for a patch?

    kind regards

    EME

  • Hi

Can you please raise a support case with Sophos Technical Support asking them to email you the updated Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync.war

  • Hello EME,

can't speak for Sophos, this just being my personal opinion therefore:

Should I open a case or do we have to wait here for a patch

As long as a suspected issue isn't "publicly officially acknowledged" (i.e. there exists an article for it) I'd submit a support request. First of all, the number of requests and severity you assign influence the priority given to the solution. Second additional information obtained from other customers might help in debugging the problem and speed up a solution. Then there might be workarounds which are not disseminated for whatever reason but nevertheless work in your situation (ah, I see that WB has replied in the meantime). While in the end you might still have to wait for a patch you shouldn't just sit back and wait.

    (another 2 €cents)
