SUM not visible on SEC_5.5 server, please help.

Just to give you a full detail on our setup here, we installed SEC_5.5 on a freshly installed WinServer 2012 then added few client computers. The computers are not part of the domain nor is SEC_5.5 installed on an Active Directory. Everything went well locally, we are able to install the antivirus manually on client computers and the computers are able to download updates, etc. We successfully installed Sophos Update Manager on one of our remote branch, however this Sophos Update Manager is not visible on the SEC_5.5. We already removed the Remote Management System on the Sophos Update Manager, but still the SUM is not visible on the SEC_5.5. we tried pinging the both and they were able to communicate (ping success), but still SUM is not visible.

  • Hello lemuel judilla,

successfully installed Sophos Update Manager on one of our remote branch
how did you install it, from a copy of SUMInstallSet or mounting the share?
    removed the Remote Management System
how did you do this? AFAIK on a SUM the RMS component isn't listed under Programs and Features. And RMS is required that a SUM can talk to SEC.

  • Thanks for the reply Christian,

I install SUM from a copy of SUMInstallSet, and is not mounted, shared only.

When I install the SEC_5.5 it shared that SUMInstallSet and Update, when I install the SUMInstallSet on a shared network, I didn't mount the shared folder. However I was able to see the RMS in the "Programs and Features" list, then removed it. Then my colleague installed the Sophos Protection. But that didn't solve the issue.

  • Hello Lemuel,

I was able to see the RMS
don't think the behaviour has changed but who knows.

Some background first: Since SUM 1.5.2 RMS is updated by SUM. AFAIK the SUM setup refuses to proceed when it finds the endpoint RMS already installed. After Installation RMS doesn't appear in Programs and Features, uninstalling SUM also uninstalls RMS. Can't say why you saw it though.
Otherwise RMS is not different from the Endpoint RMS - it must be able to connect to ports 8192 and 8194 on the management server (SEC) and SEC should be able to connect to port 8194 on the SUM server. When the Endpoint software is installed it uses the SUM-managed RMS for its communication.

I'd suggest you uninstall everything Sophos, perhaps reboot, and then run setup.exe from SUMInstallSet. Do you also want to install a console and/or configure the SUM as a Message Relay - then a certain procedure must be followed. If the install succeeds but the SUM doesn't appear in the console please check the logs in %ProgramData%\Sophos\Remote Management System\3\Router\Logs\.

  • Thanks Christian,

WE opted to do a clean install of Windows Server 2012, the server team informed me that the server was a cloned copy to speed up the testing phase.. I'm very very sorry, so we suspected that some internal server errors, especially some registry issues aswell. I'll give you an update once we encounter anything or if its a success. thanks.
