Install using an existing SQL instance?

Sorry if there is a post about this already, my searching didn't find anything about this particular question.

I have an existing SQL server, 12.0.5203.0 (2014 express), on a server.  It has one database served.  Is there some way I can leverage that instance for the SEC install?  Or will it always have to install its own instance?

I'm doing a migration from an old SQL server that's being decommissioned to a new one, but would prefer to avoid multiple SQL versions and instances if possible on the new server.

Thanks for any info.

John

  • Disregard, thinking of the memory limits of the express edition anyway, and how much unused RAM is on this server, makes no sense to bother trying to avoid installing another instance.  Server is seriously underutilized already...  Just going to do the migration as outlined and let it make its own instance...
