Sophos System Protection Service - Stops after a few days post install

I have just noticed a small niggle, where the System Protection Service stops on boot-up of the system.

All the systems have been recently migrated away from Mcafee (what a nightmare that was, it kept coming back! argh!). and are all on Sophos Central.

I have now had 3 systems exhibit this error, where the system protection service stops on boot, after working fine for 2-3 weeks.

No software has been installed apart from the usual windows & office updates

these systems did not exhibit this behaviour together, 1 happened at the start of this week, the other in the middle, and the third suddenly start today.

going to these system to restart the service works fine, and the issue has not come back (yet).

 

but why would this happen, has anyone else seen this behaviour?

how did you get around it?

any help appreciated.

  • When you say: "stops on boot", is it the case:

    1. The service starts successfully at start-up but then terminates?  

        If it terminates, does it crash and the service control manager recover it?

        If it's crashing, I would expect an entry in the Application Event log from Windows Error Reporting (WER).  Do you see this?

    2. Fails to sometimes start at boot but can be manually started without issue?

    Does the ssp log under \programdata\sophos\ suggest anthing?
