Intermittent freezing in Win 7

Computer freezes intermittently in Win 7, 64bit.  The freezing started after the installation of Anti-Virus v 7.6.18. Anyone know of any problems with this version?

  • HI,

When the machine freezes, does this coincide with AutoUpdate performing either a check for an update or performing an actual software update?  To check this is the case, if you leave taskmanager open, when it happens again, do you see the process alupdate.exe appear and dissapear? If so I would suspect after a couple of times of correlating the 2, this is the problem. You could also check the logs of Sophos Update to see if the times match up with the freeze you experience.

Otherwise, if it's not AutoUpdate.  If you open SAV and return the on-access setings to the defaults, assuming they might have been changed, does this make a diference?

Also, could the machine be running a scan when the machine is freezing?  To test this theory, if you open up the SAV GUI, in the bottom left, does it report a scan is in progress when you get the hang?

Also how long does it freeze for, seconds or minutes? This could help to characterise the problem.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

    JAK

  • Hi Bank1

Thank you for your post, Windows 7 is officially supported with the Sophos Anti-Virus 9.0 release.

  • I have discovered that Sophos Anti-Virus is not the cause of my computer freezes.  While troubleshooting, I decided to temporarily uninstall SAV.  The problem stills exists, but I can eliminate SAV as the cause.  The timing of the start of the freezing led me to believe SAV was the cause. I now believe that it must be caused by one of the start-up auto-updaters. I am investigating that now. I have re-installed SAV.

Thanks for your info and help.
