Using Enterprise Console on Remote Management Machine

Hi,

I have installed the Sophos Enterprise Console 4.5 onto a Windows 7 management machine. The full console / management server is installed on a Windows 2008 R2 Server.

When I run the Enterprise Console on the Windows 7 Machine I get...

"Management server connection failed

Could not connect to the management server.

This may be due to one of the following:
Local Network Problems
Management service has stopped on the server
Your database service has stopped

A firewall is blocking the connection
The management service is not installed on the server"

I have checked the server and the management server is running and is running under the Local System account, the database service is running as well.

Are there any ports that need opening on Windows Firewall to allow the console to communicate with the server?

Any help would be appreciate.

Thanks
David

  • Hi,

The Remote Console uses DCOM when communicating with the management service on the management server, so by default requires quite a range of ports. To prove the firewall is the problem I would try simply disabling the firewall on the 2K8 R2 machine temporarily if possible or add a new rule to allow all traffic from your Windows 7 machine as a first test.

Otherwise to rule out the remote console not finding the management server, if you go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\EE\Management Tools\ServerLocation

on your Windows 7 machine and change this to the IP address of the management server, does that help?  Could it be the existing name value in that key is not resolving correctly?

    Regards,

    Jak
