Why is the Sophos AutoUpdate Service an interactive service?

Our W2k8 R2 server admins got the following complaint from SCOM:

The Sophos AutoUpdate Service service is marked as an interactive service. However, the system is configured to not allow interactive services. This service may not function properly.

and asked me what to do. Everything seems to be running fine and of course one could simply ignore the message. Question is - is it necessary that it is an interactive service?

  • I've just been asked this by our SCOM administrator too.

Did you find out anything about this QC?

  • Hi All,

I went through this same thing during the 7.6.19 to 7.6.20 upgrade. What I learned is that Sophos has the service interactive to allow user interaction with the Sophos shield for manual updates. It is done by design and only W2K8 servers seem to have and issue with it. If the Sophos shield on the server is only going to be used by admin accounts then disabling the interactive function in the service will not cause an issue. My testing never showed any windows account being prevented from using the Sophos shield to do a manual update but I trust Sophos knows more about their product then I do.

    Covered under case 2376128

    Hope this helps,

    VCU
